yep, but that is also what mpi 1.1 says,
i've learned this the hard way - that in the standard does not mean in the
implementation.

lots of neat things can be done with threadsafe (and perhaps even multi
threaded) implementations of mpi. i hope somebody is willing to start from
scratch and come up with an implementation, even if it was only a subset. (a
mpi_probe, mpi_send/recv and the 'admin' functions would do just fine.)
