This is specified in chapter 2 (page 7, lines 10-11) as the default for
all MPI calls, unless otherwise specified.  Chapter 2 may be skipped by
readers, or not as carefully read.  Maybe this info should have been
repeated at the beginning of each chapter, instead of for every function.
