Debian has packaged versions of both LAM and MPICH, which you should
be able to install in the same manner as other packages. If you don't
have the package files, you can find them via http://packages.debian.org/ .
If you want to build from source, then there aren't any problems doing
that - both build happily from source.

A quick summary of the avalible packages:

MPICH 1.1.0 is included in Debian 2.0, and an updated package fixing
several bugs will be in 2.1 (due to be released on Tuesday). LAM 6.1
will also be in 2.1. A package of MPICH 1.1.2 is in the unstable
distribution, due to be release sometime in the next year.
