a simpler test (rather than starting mpi programs) is to do a rlogin and
see if it asks you for a password. if it does, then rsh <command> won't
work (for mpi).

.rhosts etc. apart, sometimes its hard to pinpoint what the problem is. I
have encountered situations where all the remote host files are set up
properly but rsh still fails. *boggle*
