great, thanks for the info.

yes, i do use

	pvm_setopt(PvmRoute, PvmRouteDirect);

i have too look into the stuff some more.

yet as Matt said, the question remains open why small problem sizes
cause problem, big ones do not.

i've also found out that each time the problem occured. 2 slaves where
trying to send to each other. could it be that it has to do with a
synchronization problem?

recently i've also seen the problem for only 4 slaves.
