Newsgroups: comp.parallel.pvm From: jidingyi@omega.scs.carleton.ca (dingyi jin) Subject: Advise needed for possible library tools Organization: School of Computer Science, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada Date: 25 Sep 1997 23:11:04 GMT Message-ID: <60er28$pq@bertrand.ccs.carleton.ca> Sorry! The previous posting is not complete. Expert advice is solicited for the following task: I am doing a survey on parallel computing on a network (LAN) of computers. I understand that PVM is the de factor tool for this purpose. However, The current version of PVM only supports static allocation of nodes in that the host conditions, the network configurations etc are not considered. Thus, allocation of relatively nonbusy node at run-time can't be achieved. What I am interested in is to provide a tool that can gather these information which can then be used by application programs at run-time. I would like your advice in the following questions: 1). How valuable is this kind of tool? Does it exist or is under development? 2). How realistic such a tool can be created in a reasonable amount of time? 3). What are the parameters that should be taken into account? 4). Any special site on the Web where information can be found? 5). Your comments on such a work. I will be grateful to any of your advice and would appreciate it if you could send messages to: djin@turing.scs.carleton.ca. Or just post your advice here. d.jin
