 In its second year, the 1998 International Workshop on Distributed
Interactive Simulation and Real Time Applications (DIS-RT98), will take
place in Complex Dejardins Hotel, Montreal, Canada, just before the
International Symposium on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Computer and
Telecommunication Systems (MASCOTS'98) to be held in Montreal Canada
on July 20-24, 1998. This is an excellent opportunity to partake in
two conferences covering a wide range of simulation research.

 WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:

 DIS-RT98 serves as a forum for simulationists from academia, industry
and research labs, for presenting recent research results in Distributed
Interactive Simulation, and Real Time Applications. DIS-RT'98 targets
the growing overlap between large distributed interactive simulations and
real time applications. The conference features prominent invited speakers
as well as papers by top researchers in the field.

 DIS-RT'98 will include contributed technical papers, invited papers, and
 panel discussions. The proceedings will be published by IEEE-CS press.

 For those attending the DIS-RT'98 Worskhop and/or the MASCOTS'98,
 a Montreal City-tour and a tour to Quebec City will be planned. This
 will be an excellent opportunity for researchers to socialize and
 exchange ideas.

 WORKSHOP CALL-FOR-PAPERS

 Authors are encouraged to submit both theoretical and practical results of
 significance. Demonstration of new tools/applications are very desirable.

 The scope of the workshop includes, but is not limited to:

   * Algorithms and Methods for Distributed Interactive Simulation;
     (e.g.: event synchronization, network time protocols, data
      distribution management, and multi-resolution modeling);

   * Current Critical Design Issues (e.g.: causality, simultaneous events,
     zero look-ahead, compensation for slower than real time);

   * Algorithms and Studies relating to existing protocols (e.g.: HLA, DIS
     and ALSP).

   * Methodology for Distributed Interactive Simulation;

   * Implementation issues; (e.g, general purpose distributed interactive
     simulation)

   * Interface Definition, Communication, Management, Security;

   * Performance of Distributed Interactive Simulation; (e.g., benchmark,
     theoretical studies, and empirical studies);

   * Dead-Rockoning Mechanisms;

   * Interactive Virtual Reality, Multi-User Virtual Reality,
     Interactive Simulation in Entertainment

   * Visual Interactive Simulation (e.g., generic animation, visual
     interactive modeling, interactive computer based learning)

   * Animating Language Tools, Visualisation Tools for Computational
     Process under Simulation

   * Applications of Distributed Interactive Simulation (e.g., real time
     DIS, non-real time DIS, large distributed simulation systems ).

   * Modeling and Simulation Environment for Real Time Concurrent Systems.

   * Influence of Network-Centric Systems (such as Java, and DCOM) on DIS.

   * Distributed Simulation and Real Time Applications

 Submission Guidelines: Papers written in English should not exceed 5000
words (approximately 15 pages). Papers must be unpublished and must not
be submitted for publication elsewhere. Authors are encouraged to submit papers
in electronic form to either program co-chair: Dr. Azzedine Boukerche
(azedine@cs.mcgill.ca), or Dr. Paul Reynolds (pfr@cs.virginia.edu), postcript
or Microsoft Word 6.0 (or higher) only. Hardcopy papers can also be
submitted, in which case four copies are required. Each submission, electronic
or paper, must be accompanied by the following information: a short
abstract, a complete list of authors and their affiliations, a contact person
for correspondence, postal and e-mail addresses.

 *** ATTENDANCE BY AT LEAST ONE AUTHOR IS MANDATORY.

 The Workshop Proceedings will be published by IEEE -CS press.

 IMPORTANT DATES:

  * Paper Submission Deadline:     January    5, 1998
  * Acceptance notification:       March      5, 1998
  * Camera-ready copy due:         April     20, 1998
