The solution I found is to use an equivalent version. I stepped back to
pvm3.3.11 from 3.4-beta6 on my home machines. This was then compatible
with my university's version and everything is fine.

My home machines could not talk to each other either with different
versions so it does appear that there is some low level incompatability
as metioned in the PVM on WIN NT and UNIX post by William Rankin.
