Just a little FYI, as I imagine this problem will crop up for others in the
future:

I solved the connection problem by using a hosts.equiv file on each of the
troublesome hosts (Linux).  Interestingly enough, the content of this new
hosts.equiv file was copied directly out of the .rhosts file in the user
home directory.  I am still curious as to why the .rhosts was largely
ineffective while the hosts.equiv works fine.  Seems in this instance to be
a Linux-only problem...

me in the right direction
