pvm can keep going as long as the original master deamon is alive and
well...I am new to pvm and do not know if deamons automatically restart
processes that don't report back.

the sunsite has articles on high reliability computing including
overviews of how to set up various types of failovers (by doing things
like having one machine shadow another and then change it's IP adress to
the other's if the main server fails to report).  Different types of
failover are appropriate for different situations.
