In my experience, RedHat and Debian Linux, .rhosts file in home
directory and /etc/hosts.equiv file both are needed to use r-command in
Linux system.
Therefore if you can't modify /etc/hosts.equiv file, you can start pvm
manually.
To do this, you must set up pvm hostfile to startup pvm manually.
The procedure of manual startup of pvm is decribed in the pvm user's
guide and below documents.

Good Luck.
