Greetings,

Someone here has attempted to build 64-bit versions of PVM-3.4 under
Solaris 7 (aka SunOS 5.7) using the SUNWspro 5.0 compiler. They
encountered some difficulty. Before I investigate further, rule out user
error, etc., I wonder if anyone has gone through this excercise already?
(Perhaps someone at SunHPC has patches handy.) Our particular need is
because we have to link with other 64-bit libraries, which in turn must
support "large" files (>2 GB -- not very large!).

This also begs a more general question of "augmenting" the choices for
$PVM_ARCH. To permit development of both 32-bit and 64-bit PVM programs,
is it sensible to introduce, for example, SUN4SOL2_64? And can 64-bit
and 32-bit PVM tasks cooperate in the same virtual machine and (more
precisely) on the same host? Or, alternatively, should 32-bit and 64-bit
versions of PVM be segregated by choice of $PVM_ROOT?

(This is a classic advanced topic for PVM, and this ought to be the forum
to establish "best practice".)

Thanks for your help.

Kind regards,
David
