In the latest 'Scientific Computing' there was mention of a group who
did benchmarks on barrier algorithms (if my memory doesn't deceive
me). There was also a webpage cited where they put their findings. 
I don't have that issue here with me, but I will look it up ASAP and
post the link here. Could be that it dealt specifically with shared
memory algorithms, though.
