               PARALLEL ALGORITHMS AND APPLICATIONS

                         Special Issue on

      High Level Models and Languages for Parallel Processing

Papers are solicited for a special issue of the Journal of Parallel
Algorithms and Applications to be published in September 2000.

Introduction

With the availability of standard libraries for parallel programming
such as PVM and MPI, portability of code across different architectures
is less of a problem than before. However, maintaining performance gains
across different platforms is still an issue far from resolved.
Furthermore, most current parallel programming languages and libraries
are still underpinned by simple interaction models (e.g. shared
variables, send/receive) which make program development a complex and
onerous task.

By offering the ability to model more complex patterns of computation
and interaction, high level models of parallel processing offer the
opportunity to develop parallel programs which have a lifetime greater
than that of the architecture for which they were first developed. Most
of these models come with the promise of maintainable efficiency,
sophisticated program development environments and tools, opportunities
for program analysis and transformation, and automatic code generation.
This definition of a high level model is very general, encompassing
concepts as varied as formal architectural models, visual programming,
algorithmic skeletons and object-oriented patterns.

In this issue we are interested in leading edge, tutorial and survey
papers on these high level models and their use in parallel program
development, considering all aspects from the development of high level
models through their use in designing and using programming tools and
environments to techniques for and experiences of implementing programs
on real architectures.

Topics of Interest

Topics of a particular interest for this special issue include :

(i) Theoretical aspects including formal architectural and communication
models.

(ii) Methodologies, design notations and languages for high level
parallel programming.

(iii) Programming environments, implementation strategies, automatic
code generation and CASE tools.

(iv) Analysis, transformation, performance prediction and monitoring of
high level parallel programs.

(v) Experiences of using high level models in real world applications.

Submissions

Authors should send original, unpublished work in English to one of the
Guest Editors. The submission deadline is 30th September 1999. Papers
should not exceed 30 double-spaced pages and authors should follow the
Notes for Contributors in the back of the journal. An electronic copy in
Postscript format, viewable and printable with ghostview should be sent
via electronic mail, otherwise five paper copies should be sent to
arrive by the same deadline.
