***** CPS 1.0 PARALLEL DISCRETE-EVENT SIMULATOR NOW AVAILABLE *****

[Ed: Now works on CM-5, Intel iPSC (Paragon), Convex-HP Exemplar,
PVM, PCs, workstations. See new announcement below]

Discrete event simulation is used for simulating queueing networks,
such as telephone and computer networks, VLSI circuits, battlefields,
and other discrete-event systems. Traditionally, discrete event
simulations have been executed on sequential machines.
Sequential machines. i.e., uniprocessors, severely limit the size of the
simulated model and the simulation running time.

CPS 1.0 enables efficient discrete event simulations on parallel machines.
CPS 1.0 modules are written in C programming language, and have to be
linked with user's application program. CPS 1.0 currently runs on Intel
iPSC multicomputers, but can be ported (upon request) to other parallel
MIMD machines, such as Caltech hypercubes or Sequent multicomputers.

The main features of CPS 1.0 are:

(1) It is as easy to run a simulation with CPS 1.0 as it is to run a
    sequential simulation.
(2) The synchronization and message-passing mechanisms are hidden.
(3) CPS 1.0 provides a choice of automatic or manual mapping of the
simulated system onto the multicomputer nodes.
(4) CPS 1.0 greatly speeds up simulations. A typical run: 29.8 min (1 node),
    16.9 min (2 nodes), 10 min (4 nodes), 5.8 min (8 nodes), 3.3 min
    (16 nodes), 2.1 min (32 nodes).
(5) Parallel simulations in CPS 1.0 are deadlock-free.
(6) CPS 1.0 provides a library of functions (random number generation,
many different report facilities; computes utilization, mean queue
length, throughput, mean response time, variances, etc.).

  * You don't need to own a parallel machine, you just need an account.

CPSim is a high-performance discrete event simulation tool for writing
simulations in C. It runs on CM-5, Intel iPSC (Paragon), Convex-HP Exemplar,
PVM, PCs, workstations. Applications are fully portable accross all platforms.
